Patients cared for within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation often have palliative care needs, but Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation training may not consistently equip Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians with the symptom management and communication skills required to fully address these needs. A palliative symptom management and communication skillset aligns with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s holistic approach to care and can enhance the comprehensive care Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians provide for patients with diagnoses ranging from neurotrauma to cancer to vascular disease. As the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation population ages and presents with higher levels of morbidity, it is increasingly urgent for clinicians and educators in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to consider the role for a palliative approach within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation training and practice.
During this interactive session, participants will explore palliative care principles, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation patient populations that can benefit most from palliative care, the added value palliative care can provide for patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems, and the current availability of palliative care education for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation trainees and practicing physicians. Participants will also learn how to access available educational resources to support independent palliative care skill development. Through case-based discussion and facilitated small group work, participants will identify opportunities to integrate a palliative approach within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation clinical encounters and to identify opportunities to teach Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation-relevant palliative care concepts and skills to colleagues and trainees. The session presenters look forward to fostering conversation among clinicians and educators about the current status and future of a palliative approach within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, in service of providing the best care possible for our patients with serious and life-altering diagnoses.
