Janna Friedly, MD, MPH is a Professor in the department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington. She received her M.D. degree at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon in 2001 and completed her residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Washington in 2005. Following PM&R residency at UW, she completed a three-year NIH funded research fellowship through the Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program (RMSTP) with a focus on utilization and costs of treatments for low back pain. She completed her Masters in Public Health at the George Washington University in 2020.
She has had a faculty appointment as a clinician scientist in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine since 2005. She has served in many leadership roles within the UW Medicine System including past president of the medical staff at Harborview Medical Center, medical director of the outpatient rehabilitation medicine clinics at Harborview, co-director of the Comparative Effectiveness, Cost and Outcomes Research Center at UW and currently serves as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Her clinical expertise is in the rehabilitation of people with limb loss and she is the medical director for the limb preservation and amputation service at Harborview Medical Center. Dr. Friedly’s research focuses on the comparative effectiveness, cost and outcomes related to treatments for chronic pain (primarily low back pain and pain related to amputation). Dr. Friedly has published a number of studies related to noninvasive treatments for low back pain, including epidemiological studies, reviews and clinical trials related to the use of physical therapy, epidural injections and other noninvasive spine treatments. In addition to her research, she is the Editor-in-Chief of PM&R, the official medical journal of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
