Anne M. Kuwabara MD is currently a chief resident at Stanford University Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Kuwabara is a passionate advocate for the field of PM&R. She serves as a Resident Section Editor of The American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and resident leader of the PM&R medical student interest group at Stanford.
At the University of California-Berkeley, Dr. Kuwabara completed undergraduate studies in molecular cell biology and public policy with the goal of understanding the creation of health through a spectrum of perspectives. At the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, she investigated improving cancer detection with the use of nanotechnology biomarkers and presented this work for her honors thesis presentation. Her public policy thesis analyzed interventions to improve health literacy in and outside of the hospital setting. She worked as an American College of Sports Medicine-certified cancer exercise trainer for patients recovering from chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. With a civil engineering department team, she examined architectural ways to reduce hospital infection rates.
Dr. Kuwabara completed her medical training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Continuing her interest in public policy, she served as the Maryland State Leader of the Doctors for America organization to improve healthcare access through insurance provision. During this period, Dr. Kuwabara discovered her passion for PM&R. She founded the first Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation interest group at the medical school to promote the field.
