Susan Apkon, MD, is the Fischahs Chair in Pediatric Rehabilitation at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) and Professor and Vice-Chair in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, CO. Dr Apkon earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont School of Medicine in Burlington VT. She then completed a combined residency in pediatrics and physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Children’s Hospital Colorado and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr Apkon is board certified in pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and pediatric rehabilitation medicine.
Dr Apkon’s professional career has been focused on the care of children and young adults with neuromuscular conditions. She co-directs the Neuromuscular Program at CHCO and provides clinical care in the many multidisciplinary clinics in that program. As a rehabilitation medicine physician, Dr Apkon has focused on the physical and cognitive impact of the specific neuromuscular condition with a goal of improving a child’s function abilities in collaboration with her therapy colleagues.
Dr Apkon’s academic pursuits have been on the advancement of novel treatments for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy. She has been a site principal investigator or co-investigator on over a dozen multi-center clinical trials. She has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles with the majority focused on topics related to neuromuscular conditions, including the frequently cited articles focused on the diagnosis and management of Duchenne muscular dystrophy published in Lancet Neurology. Dr Apkon has served in different capacities to support national organizations, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, and CureSMA.
