Dr. Smith is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine and Brain Injury Medicine. She is VP of Clinical Care for Lightyear Health, which provides team-based PMR and Behavioral Health services in post-acute facilities. An Austin native, Dr. Smith received her medical school and residency training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and returned to Austin to begin her private practice in 1990. Special interests include transitions of care, managing patients throughout the entire healthcare continuum and forensic physiatry. She’s been a ‘Top Doctor’ for clinical excellence for several years in Texas and performs forensic services as a Certified Physician Life Care Planner. Leadership roles have included Chief Clinical Officer/U.S. Physiatry, Rehabilitation Medical Director/SETON Network in Austin, Medical Director of Transitions/Kindred Seattle Integrated Market in Seattle and Medical Director/CRISTA Rehabilitation (assisting with education, program development and team building in the skilled nursing, assisted living, memory care and independent living facilities). She’s taught and done research with the University of Texas Medical Branch Austin and the UT Southwestern/Austin, as interim Chair, Austin PMR Division, developing a new PMR residency program and assisting with development of a new Austin medical school. In 2012, she joined the University of Washington faculty, as Medical Director of the UWMC flagship inpatient rehabilitation unit and Associate Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine. She’s member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, American Medical Association, and the Texas Medical Association. She served on the American Hospital Association Governing Council for Long Term Care and Rehabilitation and the AAPMR Board of Governors. She was an AMA Delegate and President of both the Travis County Medical Association and Texas PMR Society. She’s received awards for clinical excellence and teaching throughout her career.
