Session Description: Performing artists are unique patients that use their body to create art. As such, they may play through the pain, ignore existing injuries, and accept these as a “badge of honor” and “normal part of being an artist”; seeking medical attention may be perceived as being weak or non-professional. As physiatrists, our focus on optimizing function makes us well suited to prevent and manage the injuries of performing artists. While all physiatrists have the basic skills to evaluate and treat a wide range of neurologic and musculoskeletal issues, performing artists may have unique clinical considerations and specific medical conditions that may need special attention.

In this session, we will explore pysiatric opportunities for Performing Arts Medicine education across the lifespan of a career. This year, we will review high-yield exam maneuvers for examining dancers and evaluation of cross-training regimens to enhance injury prevention for specific performers. We will introduce Academy members to opportunities to enhance their knowledge both through mentorship and further education. Physiatrists are the ideal PAM providers and by developing and showcasing our skills, can improve physiatric presence in the world of PAM.

Members interested in learning more about PAM will get a brief overview, but we give resources for further education. Also, there will be case presentations from current practitioners, a panel discussion, and opportunity for Q&A.
