Diagnostic ultrasound (US) is a rapidly growing area not only in Sports Medicine but also throughout the field of PM&R. While educational opportunities for US are myriad at Sports Medicine conferences, hands-on opportunities at PM&R conferences are limited. Historically, US educational sessions at PM&R conferences have been limited to “bread and butter” examinations such as shoulder, knee, and ankle. Thigh muscle injuries are exceptionally common in musculoskeletal medicine and dedicated teaching sessions are needed.

The purpose of this session is to provide the session participants with an overview of the sonographic evaluation of the thigh region including anterior, lateral, and posterior thigh. The presenters for this session are all highly-skilled sonographers who are all published in the field of ultrasound and have experience teaching to large audiences. The material will be presented using cases to highlight relevant material. At the end of the session the participants should have a strong foundation for performing diagnostic examinations of the thigh.

Learning Objectives:

Accurately identify normal sonographic appearance of thigh musculature.
Recognize thigh muscle and tendon pathology including gluteal and hamstring tendinopathy.
Discuss guidelines for thigh muscle return to play protocol.
