Dr. Tolchin will introduce key concepts in palliative care including the definition of palliative care, the distinction between palliative care and hospice, and the current model of palliative care delivery in the United States. She will describe the value palliative care provides for patients, clinicians, and health care systems and describe the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) patient populations who can benefit most from a palliative care approach as part of overall PM&R care. Dr. Tolchin will outline a PM&R-relevant palliative care communication and symptom management skillset. She will articulate the distinction between primary and specialty palliative care and describe how PM&R clinicians can play a role in providing both types of care, including collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues practicing specialty palliative care.
