Survivorship begins at the time of diagnosis for a cancer patient. Breast cancer patients can experience many impairments as a result of their cancer treatments which can include shoulder dysfunction, lymphedema, deconditioning, nausea/vomiting and neuropathies. Prehabilitation involves preparing a patient for these potential impairments by maximizing their functional potential prior to undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
A comprehensive breast cancer prehabilitation program should encompass education and interventions for the full spectrum of impairments which are unique to the breast cancer population. This includes education on risk factors, symptoms and obtaining baseline measurement for lymphedema prevention, aerobic and exercise strength training, specific and focused rehabilitation to stretch and strengthen the chest wall and rotator cuff and providing information for alternative modalities for the treatment of neuropathy and nausea/vomiting symptoms such as medical cannabis and acupuncture.
