Low back pain is the number one cause of disability in the United States and worldwide. The goal of this session is to introduce techniques to prevent and reduce low back pain that may otherwise cause disability and potentially lead to opioid use. There is abundant data that lifestyle changes (such as in diet, exercise, sleep) and integrative methods (such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, acupuncture) alleviate low back pain as part of a multi-modal pain management approach. Unfortunately, these methods are not routinely taught in medical training programs including why these approaches work and how to implement them into practice. This session will include a presentation on typical treatments for low back pain to demonstrate how lifestyle and integrative treatments compliment these traditional treatments. This comprehensive approach empowers physiatrists to be the authoritative, go-to physicians for low back pain with a deeper, wide-ranging knowledge base. Additionally, this session offers evidence-based, non-opioid pain management techniques to prevent or reduce prescribed opioids. The session will highlight these options, the evidence behind them, and practical ways to implement them into practice.
