Individuals with disabilities of all types continue to experience healthcare disparities that could be ameliorated by a physician workforce better trained to meet the needs of this population. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians, with their experience-based expertise and perspective, are ideal providers of disability education within medical school curricula. To empower Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians to champion this work, this session provides an overview of the current landscape of disability education in the United States and details best practices for developing robust curricular content, barriers to inclusion of disability within medical school curricula, and practical strategies for partnering with medical schools to initiate content. Through interactive discussion, participants will learn key content to teach, pedagogical approaches to delivering content, and skills for assessing medical school curricula for opportunities to include disability content. The session will also include a review of resources available to support participants’ development as disability educators. During the session, participants will apply new knowledge to work through cases requiring design of content and methodology to match given medical school curriculum structures, with opportunities to consider how they might apply lessons learned to their home institutions. Session faculty are Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians who have successfully advocated for and currently provide disability education in a range of formats within their medical schools.
