This lecture will review evaluation tools to diagnose sarcopenia, recommended by European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) and introduce screening tools that can be incorporated into physiatric practice. We will discuss the impact a diagnosis of sarcopenia can play in prognosis, poor surgical outcomes, and adverse events during cancer treatment. The role of prevention is critical, as it is much more challenging to regain substantial skeletal muscle mass rather than preserve it.
Learning Objectives:
Examine proposed definitions of sarcopenia
Describe imaging modalities that can be helpful to evaluate for sarcopenia
Summarize mortality and morbidity associated with sarcopenia during and after cancer treatment
