458 - Retrospective Review: Multiple General Anesthesia Experiences in Young Children

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of children who receive treatment under general anesthesia (GA) and the factors contributing to repeat treatments under GA. This study aims to identify which treatment modalities require the most re-treatment and provide an outcome-based reference for ideal treatment recommendations in young children requiring treatment under GA.

Methods:
A retrospective analysis of patients that received initial treatment under GA followed by subsequent treatment under GA. Charts were reviewed of children ages 1.5 to 8 years, between 2017-2020. Data collected included age, gender, appointment dates, appointment types, and treatments completed.

Results:
Of the 375 patients identified between 2017-2020; a total of 106 had an initial treatment under GA. Of those patients, 42% needed follow-up treatment under GA. Of those repeat GA cases, 45% required re-treatment of existing restorations. The mean age of children requiring re-treatment under subsequent GA was 4.4 (SD 2.4) and the mean age difference between initial and subsequent GA appointment was 1.1 years. Restorative treatments not requiring re-treatment under GA ranged from 81%-96% with SSC and 1 surface restorations requiring the least re-treatment and anterior resin strip crowns requiring the most re-treatments.

Conclusions:
Current restorative treatments show a high percentage of success. Treatments such as SSC and 1 surface restorations should be preferred over multi-surface resin restorations. Given the patients' age and the short time interval between GA treatments, Caries Risk Management Protocols should be emphasized to prevent failing restorations and new decay requiring additional treatment.
