198 - Factors that Affect Silver Diamine Fluoride Effectiveness

Purpose: To determine the association between Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) effectiveness and tooth- and patient–related factors.
 

Methods:
This retrospective study collected data by reviewing Dentrix (electronic dental health record) charts dated from January 2015 to March 2021. ASA I/II children in the 0-6 years age range who had at least 1 follow-up after SDF application were eligible. One hundred seventy five subjects were included. Patient-related factors such as age, medical history, behavior and oral hygiene were assessed for each subject. Tooth-related factors including tooth number, application surface, frequency of SDF application, time elapsed between diagnosis and initial SDF treatment, and definitive treatment modality for each tooth were observed.
 

Results: About 68.6% of SDF-treated teeth had arrested caries after one week, whereas only 48.7% remained arrested after 6
months. More than half (63.2%) were evaluated after 6 months of SDF application, whereas only 13.6% of teeth were evaluated after 24 months of SDF application. Majority of the SDF-arrested teeth were maxillary anterior teeth and involved the buccal and lingual surfaces. Most SDF-treated teeth were definitively restored with composite resin.  

Conclusions: The rate of SDF arrest was lower in this study population.
