Mode of Childbirth Delivery as a Risk Determinant of Early Childhood Caries

Purpose: To investigate the possible association of childbirth delivery mode and Early Childhood Caries in the low-income population attending Children’s Dental Specialist in the Detroit area.

Method: A questionnaire was presented to mothers of children 5 and younger that included 12 questions about mode of delivery of child, feeding habits after birth, oral hygiene habits of the child, and oral hygiene habits of the mother. The DMFT values were obtained after reviewing patients charts and were comparted to the survey questions.

Results: The results are pending. The hypothesized conclusion is that children born by natural delivery have different caries experience compared to children born by Cesarean Section.
