Examining the effectiveness and longevity of placing dental sealants, Kyung E, Golikeri S, (Woodhull Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY)
Research supported by BRANY IRB, 21-12-273-124(HHC)
Purpose: The purpose was to learn the effectiveness of dental sealants in prevention of dental caries with a high caries risk population such as that of Woodhull Medical Center.
Methods: A retrospective chart review will be completed of the children treated in the Pediatric Dental Department at Woodhull Medical Center. An analysis will be completed of whether or not sealants are present at each recall visit as well as if caries is present. The data for the present study will be collected covering a two-year period from January 2017 to December 2019.

Results: The CDC reports that dental sealants prevent 80 percent of cavities for two years after application and continue to protect against 50 percent of cavities for up to 4 years after placement. Results of the current study are pending. Statistical analysis will be completed once the study period has concluded.
Conclusion: The current hypothesis is that teeth that had dental sealants placed on posterior occlusal surfaces, will have less incidence of occlusal dental caries compared to those without dental sealants. Dental sealants placed in pediatric patients at Woodhull Medical Center will last up to two years. However, the conclusion is to be determined based on the results of the pending surveys.
