Purpose: The aim of this study will be to determine if lavender aromatherapy can be used as an adjunct non-pharmacological method to reduce anxiety and fear in pediatric patients.
Methods:
This study will assess the impact of using lavender essential oil before and during operative dental procedures on patients between the ages of 5-12 years old. Patients will receive two sessions of dental treatment: one appointment with no lavender essential oil therapy before and during the procedure and one with lavender essential oil aromatherapy before and during the procedure. The Wong-Baker Faces Pain rating scale will be used to rate the patient’s pain perception before, during, and after dental treatment in order to determine each patient’s anxiety and perception of fear. Each patient will also be monitored for physiologic changes such as blood pressure, pulse rate, and oxygen saturation to further determine the effects of inhalation of lavender oil.
Results: This study shows that lavender is a good adjunctive non-pharmacological method to help reduce anxiety during pediatric dental procedures. However, it may not be sufficient to be used by itself.
