524 - Treatment Outcomes on Teeth Treated with Silver Diamine Fluoride

Purpose: To determine whether clinical and sociodemographic factors were associated with treatment outcomes of primary teeth treated with Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF).

Methods: A retrospective chart review of pediatric patients aged 12 years and younger treated with SDF application at UMSOD from January 2015 to December 2020 was completed. Patients who did not return for at least one follow-up session were excluded. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected. Treatment outcomes were evaluated in three categories: caries that appeared arrested, lesions with pathological findings, and new caries lesions present at the follow-up visit. Chi-Square was used to compare clinical and sociodemographic variables to associated treatment outcomes.

Results: A total of 300 subjects were included in this study. Caries lesions appeared to be arrested in more than half of the subjects. Interestingly, there were 16% of the subjects presented with pathology. None of the socio-demographic factors were found significantly associated with treatment outcome. Carious lesions on anterior teeth (P=.0073) and Maxillary teeth (P=.0106) were significantly higher to appear arrested. Carious lesions that appeared arrested were found significantly higher (P <.0001) in the follow-up interval of 6 months and less. Among all the subjects with pathology outcomes, oral hygiene appeared to be poor or fair.

Conclusions: Follow-up intervals of 6 months or less have a significant association with caries arrestment after SDF application. Caries location (maxillary and anterior teeth) was significantly associated with caries arrestment.
