Examining Pre- and Post-operative Behaviors in Children who have Undergone Dental Treatment Under General Anesthesia in a Hospital Setting, Wong J, Golikeri S, (Woodhull Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY) Research supported by BRANY IRB, (21-12-510-124(HHC))
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess changes in behavior in children who have undergone dental treatment under general anesthesia at Woodhull Medical Center’s Pediatric Dental Practice.
Methods: This study will analyze the pediatric patient population at Woodhull Medical Center Pediatric Dental Clinic that have undergone a general anesthesia procedure. Age, Frankl score at initial visits, Frankl score at recall visits before procedure and 6- and 12- month follow-up visits.
Results: In 2009, Fuher et all found that patients who were treated under general anesthesia, as opposed to conscious sedation, were approximately four times more likely to exhibit positive behavior at the 6- month recall appointment. Behavior at 12- and 18-month recall appointments, although not statistically significant, trended towards positive behavior. Recently, Vinson et al found that children treated under general anesthesia in an office based setting were more likely to exhibit positive behavior at the 6- and 12- month recall appointments versus those in a hospital general anesthesia setting. Results of the current study are pending. Statistical analysis will be completed once the study period has concluded.
Conclusion: The current hypothesis is that there is significant improvement in behavior after pediatric patients undergo general anesthesia for dental treatment. However, the conclusion is to be determined based on the results of the data analysis.
