Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Dr. Laura Anne Jacox, DMD, PhD, MS is an Assistant Professor of Research and Orthodontics at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Adams School of Dentistry. As an orthodontics faculty member, Dr. Jacox established a lab and independent research program focused on understanding how Dentofacial Disharmonies (DFD) influence speech. Her team is conducting a longitudinal clinical study on the influence of jaw disharmonies and their surgical correction on articulation, in collaboration with oral surgeons, Dr. Timothy Turvey and Dr. George Blakey, speech pathologist Dr. David Zajac, and linguistics professor Dr. Jeff Mielke. This project has yielded interesting data on surgical speech outcomes, which will be discussed in her presentation, with continued external funding from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, the American Association of Orthodontics Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
