The sedation of anxious pediatric patients can be challenging even for the most experienced sedation provider. In particular, older children with severe needle phobias can be especially challenging. Traditional routes of sedation include oral and intra-muscular sedatives, but these methods have severe limitations and disadvantages. This lecture will focus on relatively new analgesics and sedatives that may offer more promising and smoother techniques for pediatric sedation in the oral surgery office, including sublingual sedatives and clonidine. Updated guidelines for pediatric fasting before sedation also will be discussed as well as new respiratory monitors and techniques to rescue the pediatric airway in event of an emergency.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Determine novel sedatives that can provide useful alternatives to traditional oral or intra-muscular sedation techniques.
Describe the evidence behind more liberal fasting guidelines in pediatric sedation.
Analyze the need, utility and advantages of novel pediatric airway techniques that are critical for airway rescue.
