With a 30-year history of managing head and neck trauma at LEMC, this session will describe protocols for the management of blunt force injury, penetrating neck trauma, larynx fracture and tracheolaryngeal lacerations/separation, cervical esophageal perforations and role for pan endoscopy. The goal is to inform the audience of a stepwise approach including initial evaluation, non-surgical management, indications for surgery and timing. This discussion will use case examples and encourage audience participation.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Identify laryngeal and esophageal injuries.
Design a plan for management of penetrating/blunt neck trauma using an algorithmic approach. Injuries include tracheal/laryngeal fractures, tracheolaryngeal laceration/separation, esophageal perforation or injury, disruption of the deep neck structures.
Demonstrate the ability to perform medical or surgical management of airway/esophageal injuries.
Manage patients in the postoperative course. Follow patients with observation and medical management depending on treatment plan.
Demonstrate the necessary medical and surgical knowledge to effectively recognize, intervene, and treat patients with the aforementioned constellation of injuries to achieve a successful outcome.
