Dr. Elizabeth Nichols is an Associate Professor, Clinical Director and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations in the department of Radiation Oncology at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. She also serves as Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland Medical Center. After graduating from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree, Dr. Nichols earned her medical degree from the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine and completed her internship and residency in radiation oncology at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where she served as chief resident. As a clinician, Dr. Nichols specializes in the treatment of breast and gynecologic cancers, including the use of radiation therapy in the management of uterine carcinosarcoma. She treats patients at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as the Maryland Proton Treatment Center.
Her current research focuses on novel approaches to treating early-stage breast cancer with the GammaPod, an FDA-cleared radiation therapy system invented at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. Dr. Nichols also co-chairs the GammaPod Research Consortium, comprised of institutions, such as University of Maryland Medical Center, which have this new radiation system designed specifically to treat breast cancer. She is interested in the use of proton therapy to treat locally advanced breast cancers as well combining radiation with hyperthermia, also for breast cancer. As a School of Medicine faculty member, Dr. Nichols teaches “Introduction to Clinical Medicine” to first-year medical students and serves on a variety of medical school, hospital and departmental committees.
She has published nearly 30 scientific articles, including seven as first author, and three book chapters, two as first author.
