Some of the most common questions and comments that we in the Office of Training & Workforce Development (OTWD) hear from potential K99/R00 applicants are about the need of a first-authored, peer-reviewed research paper from the current postdoc lab. Certainly, papers are the primary means of demonstrating productivity, and the majority of our previous K99/R00 awardees have had at least one from their postdoc prior to their award. However, nearly 25% of our previous awardees have had no first-author papers from their postdoc at the time of their application. So why do their applications still fare so well during review? Their applications do well in review because all of these individuals thoroughly described their productivity, plans for continued research output, and vision for making an impact through their research in their proposals. So, preliminary data, preprints, co-author papers, and first-author papers from the graduate laboratory should be included and highlighted, where appropriate, in the application (e.g., in the research strategy, biosketch). Plans for forthcoming or future papers should also be described by both applicants and their mentors in sufficient detail (i.e., provide more detail than “submitted”, “in review”, or “in revision”). By doing so, collectively, you make the entirety of your research accomplishments and your potential as a future leader in your field clear to reviewers.

Today we announced that #NIH will increase annual pay levels for predoctoral and postdoctoral scholars who are recipients of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA). This pay level increase is based on recommendations made by my advisory group. Investing in our pre- and postdoctoral scholars is an important part of ensuring the future of the biomedical research workforce and enterprise remains strong and globally competitive. This increase in pay levels for NRSA recipients is just a first step toward reaffirming their value and ensuring they are appropriately compensated. I am hopeful these continued efforts help us attract and retain our nation’s brightest scientific minds. https://lnkd.in/eAy7J7aE

What is peripheral neuropathy? Peripheral neuropathy refers to the many conditions that involve damage to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is a large communications network that sends signals between the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and all other parts of the body: https://lnkd.in/e_CQQzfn.

Structural MRI has emerged as a promising approach for detecting chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and other brain disorders associated with repeated head trauma. Using MRI, the NINDS-funded DIAGNOSE CTE project found reduced brain thickness and volume in former American football players compared to people who did not play contact sports. The results add to our understanding of how head impacts affect the brain and may help researchers develop new ways of diagnosing CTE and related conditions. https://lnkd.in/dc4p9n2c
