Berdoo, the documentary film we created based on research we did on chronic absenteeism during my MPH, is now an award-winning film!! Whenever I’m asked in any interview or application what I’m most proud of, my default answer is always the Berdoo Film Project. So many people had invested time and money in it, and it survived the pandemic. Also it’s such an important narrative that is almost never told. So after 3 years of sitting on the shelf, not only did it have its first in-person screening, it won TWO awards at the first ever Inland Film Festival! 4.20.2024 was literally a dream! Thank you to everyone that came out! I’m so incredibly grateful to the Garcia Center for the Arts, our team Andrew Vong and Giacomo Thillet for coming along on this crazy ride, the people San Bernardino City Unified School District that have adopted me in Mikki Cichocki, Yesenia C., Eric Vetere, Dr. Gwendolyn Dowdy-Rodgers, Dale Marsden, hector murrieta and Marlene Bicendova; mentors and classmates at Loma Linda University School of Public Health that inspired me like Monita B., Stephen Sledge, Bobby Brown, Monica Dorame, Marcus Chapman, Dwight Barrett, Ed.D. Just as Joseph planned and prepared for the 7 years of famine, it’s important for us to be prepared in order to keep our family and community safe and healthy.

On Reproductive and Sexual Health Day of #NPHW, Global Health Professor, Dr. Ron Mataya gave us a quick crash course on what is included in this part of health, why it’s important, why we should care, and what we can do to make sure everyone has equal access to this care.
