I am thrilled to announce the successful completion and defense of my PhD at NMBU - Norwegian University of Life Sciences 🎉. My thesis, titled “Very-Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and their biological functions” has been a journey of exploration and discovery in collaboration with the brilliant minds at Nofima, NMBU, and Epax Norway AS. The research findings shed light on the potential health benefits of very long chain marine fatty acids, VLC-PUFAs. Under the mentorship of Prof. Bente Ruyter (NMBU and Nofima) and with the invaluable support of Drs. Elisabeth Ytteborg (Nofima), Astrid Nilsson (Nofima), Iren Stoknes (Epax) and Harald Svensen (Epax), my research has focused on unraveling the biological roles of these novel VLC fatty acids derived from marine fish. Our studies have unveiled a linear relationship between dietary concentration and uptake in various tissues, particularly in skin, suggesting potential applications for skin health and wound healing. Further investigations, including intervention studies on Atlantic salmon, have demonstrated the positive impact of VLC-PUFAs on skin development and thickness, potentially offering protection against infections and mechanical damage. Additionally, studies on bone mineralization and density in salmon suggest potential benefits for bone health. This research holds a great significance in the utility of VLC-PUFAs as supplements, and I am proud to have contributed to this emerging field, and excited about the future potential this might have. I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to my esteemed opponents Prof. Kaisa Linderborg (University of Turku) and Dr. Even Fjære (Institute of Marine Research) for their invaluable contributions during the defense. Your questions and insightful contributions were not only enriching, but also made this day a truly great and memorable experience. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisors, colleagues, friends, and family, who have been my pillars of support throughout this journey. Tomorrow's a big day🥳 Martina Torrissen, our industrial-PhD, will be defending her thesis entitled Very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and their biological functions at NMBU - Norwegian University of Life Sciences👩🔬 Under the guidance of Prof Bente Ruyter (NMBU and Nofima) as supervisor and Drs. Elisabeth Ytteborg (Nofima), Iren Stoknes and Harald Svensen (both Epax) as co-supervisors, Martina has researched the biological role of the novel VLC fatty acids from marine fish. A long and comprehensive development program from Epax has led to the availability of these oils as a supplement and Martina´s work is of great importance to support the utility of these oils as supplements. We at Epax believe this is the beginning of a new research field in nutrition and human health and are looking forward to supporting clinical studies and collaborate with the leading academic research institutes that are showing a growing interest in VLCFA biology🙌 Best of luck Martina, you got this!💪
