Andrew currently works with the energy storage team at Burns & McDonnell. Andrew utilizes his understanding of thermal energy to direct discussions with battery manufacturers toward understanding the best means in dealing with the battery heat generation and mitigating thermal runaway potential while maximizing battery health and performance. Andrew is interested in guiding the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) industry toward energy efficient thermal management design and technology. He has overseen the design and installation for thermal management systems of varying sizes of BESS's ranging from 2 MW/1 MWh enclosures to 100 MW/400 MWh buildings that not only maintain acceptable temperatures for the batteries, but also utilize energy saving measures to help reduce the auxiliary load directly attributed to the HVAC. Andrew combines his technical understanding of mechanical systems and the battery thermal performance, which has been gained from many collaborative efforts between Burns & McDonnell and world leading Li-Ion battery manufacturers, to assist clients with a wide range of system technologies and applications to provide the performance required as well as the energy efficiency sought after.
