Storage-as-Wires: Regulatory Structures and a Project Success on Nantucket
Wednesday, September 22, 2021
10:00 AM – 10:30 AM EST
Location: Storage Central Theater: Booth 5459
The utilization of energy storage in lieu of T&D upgrades is an underdeveloped application. Despite a clear potential for storage-as-wires to save costs and mitigate ratepayer impacts of traditional solutions, years of legal uncertainty stalled the advancement of the use case. Recent deployments have proven the technical applicability of storage-as-wires, leading to progress in the development of regulatory structures. In this session, Customized Energy Solutions and POWER Engineers will explore policies that support storage-as-wires in the U.S. and abroad, and highlight one specific example. POWER acted as Owner’s Engineer for National Grid, which recently installed a 6 MW/48 MWh lithium ion battery energy storage system (BESS) and a new 15 MW diesel generator on Nantucket as an alternative to a costly underwater supply cable to meet load growth. This session will give attendees an understanding of how storage-as-wires structures can be incorporated into various markets.
