Objectives: Evaluate feasibility, utilization and acceptance of a free live online lecture series to introduce medical students to the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
Design: Teaching faculty from three residency programs all located in the state of North Carolina assembled a series of nine hour-long lectures, which were presented virtually via the Zoom platform on a weekly basis spanning the months of July through September . Topics covered core areas of the field (such as Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, etc.) as well as a case study in PM&R research. Sessions were advertised through participating institution websites and social media accounts. Feedback was solicited from participants through an end-of-course anonymous survey.
Results: A total of 86 medical students attended at least one lecture from the series. Individual lectures averaged 32 attendees. We received just 15 anonymous course evaluations. 87% of these were fourth year medical students in MD and DO programs. 93% described the event as "extremely helpful," and 100% indicated that they would recommend the course to peers considering PM&R as a specialty choice. 100% of evaluators also indicated that they would be more likely to pursue residency training at host institutions as a result of their participation. Qualitative feedback was also very positive. Constructive feedback commonly cited the desire to engage learners with questions and other interactions. They also requested additional content, including handouts and lecture slides, that could be viewed before or after each session.
Conclusions: This free virtual lecture series for medical students considering PM&R was well-received and well-attended. Participants indicated they would be more likely to pursue training at host institutions as a result of their experience.
