University Librarian Carleton University, Ontario, Canada
Often the library literature focuses on support and services for patrons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Equally important to an inclusive library environment is providing employment opportunities for individuals with ASD. In this presentation you will hear from an academic library employee and individual with ASD about his experience working in an academic library. You will also hear from his direct supervisor and the university librarian about the benefits of welcoming staff with ASD and how it enriches the library environment for all staff and patrons.
This presentation will discuss supporting an employee with ASD; recognizing challenges, and share strategies learned to structure a safe and supportive environment. It will also talk about working with campus partners and identifying resources to support staff and managers.
Our goal through this presentation is to share with others that welcoming staff with ASD is a very rewarding experience.
