We invite all new librarians, especially people of colour (POCs), to join us as we explore the current landscape of diversity and inclusion in librarianship. By attending our session, new librarians will be able to advocate for themselves in their occupation especially when faced with barriers or microaggressions. They will understand the importance of their role as a librarian of colour in a predominantly white industry and why inclusion and equity in librarianship is essential to serving their community. New librarians and those entering the field will learn about the history of marginalized librarians in North America.
Also, our participants will have the opportunity to make connections with other librarians of colour and learn about resources and networks for POC librarians. We will start them on the path to mentorship as it is one of the key resources to help POC librarians overcome barriers to inclusion in the field. We want our participants to leave our session feeling empowered and able to navigate the unique challenges POC librarians face in the field; we want our participants to leave knowing that there is a whole community of librarians who are sharing in their experience.
