Background. The COVID-19 pandemic challenged nursing faculty to find alternative ways to offer students clinical experiences. In response, faculty partnered with the American Red Cross (ARC) to deliver an 8-hour alternative clinical experience in which students learned about the blood donation process and the ARC and served as Blood Donor Ambassadors (BDA). This presentation will provide attendees with an overview of the BDA program and the practical tools and tips needed to deliver this alternative clinical experience.
Design. The alternative clinical day included multiple preclinical activities involving videos about the ARC and the donation process, prebriefing about clinical requirements, and assignments about the BDA role. After completing the ARC volunteer application, students completed 1 6-hour shift at a day and time of their choosing. Follow-up activities included debriefing and a self-reflection activity. Faculty conducted pre- and debriefing and provided oversight and coordination in cooperation.
Outcome. Students had overwhelmingly positive remarks about the experience. In addition to demonstrating enhanced theoretical knowledge about the blood donation process, many shared that they were impressed with the safeguards taken at multiple points to protect the blood supply. They were overwhelmed by the warm reception from the donors. Multiple students continued to volunteer additional hours after the clinical experience.
Implications. The BDA experience combines meaningful service with clinical-based learning and is an effective means to deliver an alternative clinical experience. Blood donation remains essential during the COVID-19 crisis. Nursing schools are well-positioned to have a positive effect on local health outcomes by supporting the blood donation process through the Ambassador program.
