Managing Director Ashes2Art Cabin John, Maryland, United States
Presentation Details: The Ashes2Art Program, a non-profit organization based in Virginia, has been working with first responders and their families as part of a preventative wellness initiative for the last 4 years. Offering the creative arts and reregulating techniques to reduce cumulative stress, Ashes2Art has experienced the successful methods and the road blocks in providing a successful program for emergency services personnel. With over 80% of the initial participants still involved with the program, Ashes2Art has a mission to educate others in the power, safety, and efficacy of practicing the act of creation to counterbalance the destructions of the job. Specific findings of relevance will be discussed as observed through the produced artwork itself which is a concrete display of behavioral information. Research supporting the arts and health will be discussed along with the specific format Ashes2Art presented to the responders to address safety, resistance, creativity, and over-identification with the responder role. A secondary initiative termed Mindful Decon will be discussed and shared. Additionally, certain progressive techniques will be discussed as having successful outcomes to addressing trauma which call for further exploration.
Upon completion, participants will be able to
Understand the basic physiological effects of trauma.
Learn about first responder personality as seen through the artwork.
Learn grounding techniques and Amygdala Grounding Techniques (A.R.T.).
