Chief Chaplain AK Police Fire Chaplains Anchorage, Alaska, United States
Presentation Details: Canines have had a symbiotic relationship with humans for over 15,000 years. The human canine bond has continued to grow over those years from keeping watch, transportation, food and shelter to one where the canine brings a feeling of safety, care, kindness and companionship to the human. Canines have always been of great assistance to man in times of uncertainty. Today the gifts of canines are being used in a multitude of ways. The benefit of a well selected and trained canine and handler in the work of a responder chaplain will be explored and described in this presentation. Examples of actual experiences from CISM work post air disasters, law enforcement and fire events will be shared. Their benefit in supporting an entire community post disasters will also be explored. The Canine's ability to connect with the vast majority of people and to bring a sense of calm and safety will be shared. Video, still photos, anecdotal stories are expected to maintain attention as the breadth of types of opportunities for promoting resilience and wellness using these special canines are explored.
