Presentation Details: In current times, anti-law enforcement sentiment has risen and has brought with it an increase in violence perpetuated against law enforcement officers. Officers may feel an intense mixture of heartbreak, exhaustion, and anger towards the negative portrayal of law enforcement within the media and their communities, and increased stress brought on by COVID-19. Present times are difficult and an officer may find it harder and harder to maintain their composure and stay professional. When expressed correctly, reactions can be a positive tool. They can protect the individual from threats to your safety, well-being, happiness, self-esteem, and from jeopardizing their career and future in law enforcement. In this course, students will learn what types of incidents cause these feelings. We will address the impact of social media on public safety personnel. They will also learn about the common reactions and the uncommon reactions for themselves and in their family members. They will be taught how to turn those negative reactions into positive reactions to help themselves and their family members best cope and what to do when stressors surpass normal coping mechanisms.
Upon completion, participants will be able to
Recognize the signs and symptoms in an individual that has been negatively impacted by the effects of Social Unrest.
Distinguish between the normal reactions and the abnormal reactions to the effects Social Unrest has had on an individual in Law Enforcement
Recommend effective coping strategies and help when stressors surpass normal coping mechanisms to an individual.
