Dr Calamia attended college at LSU in New Orleans and medical school at Loyola University-Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship in Rheumatology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.
After 10 years of private practice in Louisiana, Dr Calamia joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida in 1990. He was Chair of the Division of Rheumatology from 2008-2011. From 2011until 2015 he served as CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital in Waycross, GA. Dr Calamia is Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr Calamia retired from active practice in January 2021.
In his 40 years of rheumatology practice, Dr Calamia has maintained an interest in vasculitis. He was mentored by Behçetologist Desmond O’Duffy and has had a special interest in Behçet’s disease. He served as the vice-president of the International Society on Behçet’s Disease, from 2006 to 2010. He was an investigator in the Phase II study on apremilast for Behçet ulcers and was coauthor of the New England Journal report in 2015.
