Mary M. Newman, MS, is Co-Founder, President & CEO of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (SCAF), a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and help save lives. SCAF initiatives focus on education, research and community resources. Research initiatives include not only public awareness and messaging studies, but also collaboration with hospitals and universities on post-resuscitation quality of life studies among patients and families. SCAF also co-sponsors the “Call-Push-Shock” campaign.
Previously, Newman served as executive director of the National Center for Early Defibrillation, University of Pittsburgh, and as research coordinator at Krannert Institute of Cardiology, Indiana University School of Medicine. Earlier, she was founding editor of Currents in Emergency Cardiac Care, co-sponsored by American Heart Association and Citizen CPR Foundation. She created the “Chain of Survival” metaphor, which was later adopted by multiple organizations worldwide.
