Each year nearly 37,000 people are killed as a result of firearms. Medical reports indicate that nearly 500,000 people dial 9-1-1 and use require Emergency Medical Services for Gun Shot Wounds each year. The high incidence of injury and death due to firearms is second only to motor vehicle accidents. This session will use Gun Violence data collected from U.S. Cities including the City of New Orleans, Atlanta and others. During this session we will discuss types of weapons used and explain the following topics: Scene Safety, Types of Gun Shot Wounds, Mechanisms of Injury, Kinetic Energy, The Golden Period, Hemorrhage Control, How to Preserve the Crime Scene, and Basic & Advanced Life Support patient care.
