Individuals with autism spectrum disorders can present in ways that can be unpredictable and may create barriers to assessment, treatment, and transport. This session will provide a review of autism spectrum disorders, including general characteristics, communication challenges, restricted/repetitive behaviors, and sensory issues, and offer suggestions for facilitating communication, assessment, and treatment interventions.
Describe general suggestions for working with patients with disabilities.
Identify characteristics of autism spectrum disorders.
Identify and describe how those characteristics of autism spectrum disorders might complicate EMS assessment, treatment, and transport.
Identify and generate suggestions for EMS assessment and treatment when working with patients with an autism spectrum disorder.
Identify and generate suggestions for transport when working with patients with autism spectrum disorder.
