Description: Ketamine is an old analgesic and dissociative anesthetic that has recently gained traction in prehospital medicine. Ketamine is inexpensive and has an excellent safety profile and multiple routes of administration, making it an optimal medication for EMS. Additionally, ketamine has a wide therapeutic range, making it ideal for multiple EMS applications. Attendees will learn five mainstream EMS protocols for ketamine administration, along with indications, contraindications, and dosing, and will understand common adverse effects and how to treat them. We will conclude with a discussion of three emerging applications for ketamine in the prehospital setting.
