The novel type of silica nanoparticles, organosilica nanoparticles, has been developed by Nakamura and colleagues. The nanoparticles can be synthesized in a few of simple reactions and have a good size and dispersibility. Organosilica nanoparticles have SH groups on their surface, which makes it possible to conjugate them with antibodies and other protein molecules. We synthesized organosilica nanoparticles with a diameter of 100 nm, containing fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) or Rhodamine B, which resulted in high fluorescence intensity. These nanoparticles were tested in various biochemical applications and in this study, we focused on their use in flow cytometry. We found that the application of these nanoparticles with antibodies could efficiently detect specific cells in a flow cytometer. We also discuss cell tracking methods using these nanoparticles.
