Chief, Behavioral Analysis Unit United States Marshals Service
This presentation will describe the primary reasons sex offenders commit crimes against children. There are many misunderstandings about how such motivations develop and how sexual interests evolve. Importantly, there are also myths about motivational pathways and etiological factors that interfere with the assessment and treatment of offenders, and these misguided assumptions can be confusing in the courtroom. Further, understanding paraphilic and non-paraphilic motivations can assist investigators with the development of effective interview strategies and can facilitate supervision efforts by probation and parole authorities.
