When a missing child or other investigation discovers that the refuse stream is possibly involved (i.e., the child was placed in a refuse container) then a portion of the investigative effort must be hyper-focused on following the “trail of trash.” It can be a painstaking search for information, data, witness accounts, electronic evidence, business records, etc. to determine if, when and where a landfill search should be conducted. This presentation will include lessons learned from years of experience and frontline stories of successful recoveries. The presentation will include various agency considerations and responses when a missing child or other major case potentially involves the refuse stream, including a case study of a search and recovery of a missing and murdered child. This workshop will only be recorded and available On-Demand from August 9, 2021 until December 17, 2021.
