This workshop details the art and science of preparing for and conducting a cross examination of a suspect or lay defense witnesses in cases of child maltreatment. Attendees will learn to analyze a statement from a defendant or defense witness to determine areas for cross examination, to use transitions sentences during cross examination and to incorporate case themes into a cross examination. Appropriate for prosecutors and child protection attorneys, other MDT members may also gain a deeper understanding of cross examination practices. This workshop will only be recorded and available On-Demand from August 9, 2021 until December 17, 2021.
1. Students will learn techniques for reviewing a witness' prior statements and identifying statements that are ripe cross-examination materials.
2. Students will learn techniques for cross-examining a defendant or defense witnesses in a manner that corroborates the victim's statement or testimony.
3. Students will learn to cross examine a defendant or defense witness in a manner that helps the jury see a sexual or physical assault through the eyes of a victim.
4. Students will learn to incorporate trial themes into a cross examination.
