This presentation will provide an introductory overview of this harmful practice, a discussion of the medical ramifications and explanation of the types of Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C) practiced. The presenters will provide a summary of the federal and state laws addressing FGM/C and child abuse, and suggestions for interviewing victims and witnesses of FGM/C. The presentation will include the following topics: What is FGM/C and the reasons it is performed; the social, cultural, economic, and religious issues associated with FGM/C; its prevalence; the short and long term health risks for FGM/C; the applicable federal and state laws; the association between FGM/C and child abuse; and the sensitivities associated with interviewing victims of FGM/C.
