Gang rape, foster care, psychiatric hospitalization and incarceration. The foster care to trafficking pipeline is real. This is a case study of two foster youths fighting to be heard in a system that is overwhelmed, not victim-centered, not trauma informed or trauma practicing. One victim goes home and the other ends up trafficked. Lifelong exposure to trauma and polyvictimization cause developmental and complex trauma in children. Having no control over their lives in foster care, they struggle to cope and express their needs in healthy ways, often leading to being misdiagnosed, misinterpreted, hospitalized, incarcerated or over medicated. This case study looks at lessons learned from two teen foster children who were recently arrested for incorrigibility and non-compliance after experiencing traumatizing events. In both cases CPS did not understand the behaviors they were seeing. Officers were never informed of their recent traumas. Therefore, trauma informed, victim centered practices were not utilized, leading to one victim running into the arms of a trafficker. This workshop will only be recorded and available On-Demand from August 9, 2021 until December 17, 2021.
