Call for Abstracts for ASAM Virtual 2021 will be open January 4 - 25, 2021 for Posters ONLY.

Goals & Objectives

ASAM members and non-members are invited to submit abstracts for VIRTUAL poster presentations only. ASAM encourages young investigators, researchers, clinicians, and physicians from diverse organizations and fields to submit. Presentation proposals must include engaging presentation formats and teaching methods.

The ASAM Virtual 2021 goals and objectives for accepted abstracts are:
  • To present the best new scientific research available
  • To present the best practices, treatments, tools, and modalities in all areas of addiction medicine
  • To bring science into clinical practice
Submit an Abstract

Submission Requirements The following bullet points outline important requirements to consider when submitting your abstract (Please Read Carefully):
  • All accepted submissions will be presented in a virtual setting.
  • The first abstract submission period is for poster presentation, focus session, blended session, and workshop session submissions. This period will be open from September 8, 2020 through November 6, 2020.
  • The second abstract submission period is only for poster presentations. It will be open from January 4, 2021 through January 25, 2021.
  • Abstracts must be original, new work, based on the latest evidence and data. Submissions should use evidence-based information with appropriate references. Anecdotal information should be kept to a minimum.
  • Submitters are not permitted to re-submit abstracts that have been previously submitted to ASAM, whether they were accepted or not. Submissions can be similar to past submissions but MUST be significantly updated to include new data, new teaching methods, or new content.
  • Abstracts must be submitted online through the following ASAM abstract submission link: https://www.abstractscorecard.com/cfp/submit/login.asp?EventKey=HHTEZDYW. Abstracts submitted via email, fax, or mail will not be considered.
  • Abstracts submitted outside of the two submission periods will not be reviewed or considered. All submission sections must be complete in order to be considered.
  • Submitters, presenters, and authors must complete disclosure of commercial interest forms prior to completing their submissions. Submitters can have commercial disclosures BUT submissions must be free of commercial bias. Having a commercial interest will NOT disqualify a submission.
  • Submissions cannot be used to advertise or advocate for a specific commercial interest.
  • There is a limit of up to 3 abstract submissions by one submitter.
  • Submissions are limited to a total of 8 authors. Submissions must have at least 1 but no more than 4 presenting authors. Submissions may have up to 7 non-presenting authors as long as the total number of authors does not exceed 8.
  • The sections of a complete submission are:

  • Poster Submission "Abstract & Details" section includes multiple parts:
    • Title – 12 words max.
    • Topic
    • Consideration for Awards
    • Abstract – 250-500 words. This should be structured clearly and include sections such as: Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusions, etc. Prospective poster submitters can view the accepted 2020 poster submissions here.
    • References – 3-5 scholarly or scientific publications that were used to create the abstract
    • Learning Objective – 1 measurable objective viewers of this poster abstract will learn.
  • The entire submission may be completed by one submitter or by multiple submitters.
  • Accepted abstracts will appear in full in several places, including but not limited to: the Virtual Event Website, the Final Program, the ASAM e-Learning Center, and the Journal of Addiction Medicine (posters only). Submitters are responsible for ensuring that there are no conflicts with making the abstract information available, prior to the submission of the abstract.
  • First round submitters of abstracts will be notified of acceptance/non-acceptance in early December 2020. Second round submitters of abstracts will be notified of acceptance/non-acceptance of their abstract by the end of February 2021. It is the submitter's responsibility to notify their fellow presenters or authors.
  • Upon acceptance, all presenters and authors will be asked for additional information(eg, presenter photos and bios, poster PDFs, presenter agreements, etc.). Non-presenting authors will also have information they need to submit. Information must be completed by their posted deadlines. There will be one preliminary deadline in mid-January 2021 and a final deadline in early March 2021. All presentation slides and poster PDFs will be reviewed by members of the ASAM Virtual Program Planning Committee and feedback will be provided. This review MUST be completed before the presentation can be shown to virtual attendees.
  • Presenters of accepted abstracts will receive 50% off the registration rate after all presentation materials have been turned in.

Submission Topics The ASAM Virtual Planning Committee seeks to provide content on a wide variety of topics to best meet the interests and learning needs of our ASAM Virtual 2021 attendees. Abstracts on any topic related to addiction medicine will be considered. Data from Virtual 2020 attendees on their expressed topics of interest are listed below.

Submission Categories

These are the submission categories accepted during the first abstract submission period (September 8 - November 6, 2020). Poster presentation submissions are the only submission type that will be accepted during the second abstract submission period (January 4 - 25, 2021).

  • Focus Sessions: Virtual focus sessions are 60-minute presentations designed to give learners an in-depth understanding of a specific clinical or scientific topic. Focus sessions are typically presented in a structured didactic format but other creative teaching methods are strongly encouraged. Virtual focus sessions will have a PRE-RECORDED presentation that will be aired to a LIVE virtual audience. Presenters will use a virtual chat box to engage with the LIVE audience and answer LIVE audience questions.
  • Blended Sessions: Virtual blended sessions are comprised of two parts: a 30-minute, asynchronous activity followed by a 60-minute LIVE, interactive, and experiential session. Presenters are encouraged to use a variety of teaching formats for both sections of their blended sessions.
  • Workshop Sessions: Virtual workshop sessions are 60-minute interactive and experiential sessions designed to give learners an in-depth understanding of a specific clinical or scientific topic. Virtual workshop sessions must use a variety of interactive teaching formats such as small group discussion, case-examples, demonstrations, worksheets, and other skill-building exercises. Virtual workshop sessions will be presented LIVE to a LIVE virtual audience.
  • Poster Presentations: Virtual poster presentations offer an opportunity to share research interests and ideas. Presenters are required to prepare electronic posters, pre-record 5-minute audio presentations, and participate in live virtual chats with attendees on BOTH Thursday, April 22, 2021 AND Friday, April 23, 2021. Abstract Writing Resources

The ASAM Virtual Program Planning Committee recommends the following abstract writing resources for those unsure of how to begin their abstract:

Abstract Awards The ASAM Virtual Program Planning Committee will recognize the primary authors of high scoring and exceptional posters abstracts with the following six awards:

  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Best Overall
    This award is presented to the primary author of the highest scoring submitted abstract.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Representation in Research
    This award is presented to a poster's primary author who is from racial and/or ethnic underrepresented minority backgrounds (ie, American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Non-Caucasian Hispanic or Latinx). A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Resident
    This award is presented to a poster’s primary author who is currently enrolled in a medical residency program. A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Fellow-in-Training
    This award is presented to a poster’s primary author who is currently enrolled in a medical fellowship program. A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Associated Professionals
    This award is presented to a poster's primary author who is one of the following types of professional: Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN), Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatry (Psych-CNS), Clinical Psychologists (PhD or PsyD), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Doctor of Nursing Science (DNP or equivalent), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician Assistant (PA), Registered Nurse (RN), Social Workers, or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Underserved Population
    This award is presented to the primary author of the highest scoring submitted abstract that addresses research on an underserved population (characterized by race, ethnicity, gender, and/or sexual orientation). 
These awards will be made on the basis of new ideas or findings of importance to the field of addiction medicine, their methodology, and clarity of presentation, as judged by the Committee. The ASAM Virtual Program Planning Committee will select "Honorable Mentions" in categories where there are multiple exceptional submissions. Award winners will be notified by the end of February 2021.

Reviewers & Review ProcessAll submissions are reviewed for quality, scientific value, interest to conference registrants, and overall appropriateness for inclusion in the program. Abstracts will be evaluated based on the submission criteria using a scale ranging from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Abstracts will be reviewed by multiple reviewers and the average score will be used to rank the priority of the presentation.

Reviewers will also review the financial disclosures of the abstract authors in cases where there is a concern. Having a financial disclosure will NOT preclude an abstract's acceptance.

The Program Planning Committee are the primary abstract reviewers. However, ASAM would also like to encourage fellows-in-training to volunteer to participate as abstract reviewers. Additional abstract reviewers must be current fellows-in-training at an ACGME Accredited Fellowship Program.The Call for Abstract Reviewers was open from September 8, 2020 - October 16, 2020.

Notification Letters

All notifications, of acceptance or non-acceptance, will be sent by email. It is the submitter’s responsibility to ensure his/her email address is correct and current. ASAM is not responsible for notification emails not received due to incorrect contact information.

All abstract presenters will be asked to confirm receipt of their notification email and officially accept the invitation to present their abstract. Notification letters for abstract submissions received during the first Call for Abstracts period were sent out on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. Notifcation letters for abstract submissions received duing the second Call for Abstracts period will be sent out in mid-February 2021. If you do not receive a notification email, contact the Education Department at: education@ASAM.org, immediately to confirm acceptance or non-acceptance of your submission.

Abstract Cancellation Policy Please do not submit an abstract if you are not confident that you will be able to attend the conference and make the presentation. Cancellations impose a serious burden on the development of the conference program and may negatively impact the overall quality of the program.

If your presentation has been accepted but extenuating circumstances prevent your attendance, we ask that you attempt to find another individual to make the presentation and notify us of this change as soon as possible at: education@ASAM.org.

If no other individual is available to present the accepted abstract and cancellation becomes unavoidable, please contact us immediately at the aforementioned email address so we can remove your presentation from the conference program.
