Polyunsaturated fatty acids modulate growth, development and general health. Recently, the emphasis on nutritional effects on brain function has led to an increasing number of studies that report on the influence of PUFA and especially long chain PUFA on neurocognitive and mental health, as well as the related, underlying PUFA biochemistry. This session brings together reports of three clinical studies on PUFA with three studies on emerging concepts in the fundamental biochemistry of PUFA, relevant to nutrition.
