Libraries are increasingly adding social services, but many library workers do not have the training or support seen in social work. Most professionals agree that compassion fatigue is a combination of secondary trauma and burnout, and is commonly seen among first responders who are exposed to trauma. Though it is rewarding to help vulnerable people, empathetic people are at risk for taking on the emotional burdens and stressors of others. If you ever feel worn out, overwhelmed, or preoccupied, come to this workshop to assess your own personal level of compassion fatigue and learn self-care methods to help you cope.
