The 2021 RUSA Emerging Technologies Showcase, in coordination with our esteemed presenters and partners, will offer a wide variety of library technologies currently in use, including demonstration of various tools as well as a focus on how emerging technologies have stayed relevant and become even more important during the pandemic.
Cathleen Doyle, Maker Services Manager at Northbrook Public Library, will highlight tools and services offered at the Northbrook Public library's makerspace, the Collaboratory, such as their Carvey CNC machine and their popular biannual repair clinic, Northbrook Repairs. She will discuss how they were able to safely offer in-person services in their makerspace during the pandemic, as well. Deanna Musurlian, Head of Innovation Services at Glenview Public Library in Glenview, Illinois, will discuss reaching patrons virtually during the pandemic and talk about empowering library patrons to learn new skills and use the tools for themselves. Deanna will also demonstrate the Trotec Laser Cutter.
Jimmy Gonzalez-Vicker, Technology Librarian at the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District (WNPLD) in Winnetka, Illinois will discuss the sense of community that is created in makerspaces, maker programs, and how to keep those communities going -even through a pandemic! Jimmy will also demonstrate some of the equipment available in The Constance E. Staffileno Studio, the makerspace at WNPLD.
Jennifer Hovanec, Library Director at the Calumet City Public Library, Calumet City, Illinois, will talk about makerspaces from the administrative perspective and what is needed to get a makerspace started, including a focus on education and tangible life skills. This program is aimed at all library types and professionals who are looking for information on the successful application and management of interactive, virtual, and other emerging technologies.
Participants will identify new library technology and/or makerspace options from a variety of presenters and library types.
Participants will identify technologies of particular interest and obtain additional demonstration and/or hands-on training (in smaller breakout groups) from colleagues and/or vendors.
Participants will identify an overview of how to apply and manage various new library technologies in a variety of library types.
